LESSON TITLE: Nehemiah: Restoration to the Poor

Topics: Blessings, Caring, Giving and Helping

Basic truth: Today you will see that while Nehemiah was restoring the walls in  Jerusalem, he also helped bring justice to the poor. Thus it is important to show care and kindness to the poor.

Bible Verse: “He who gives to the poor will lack nothing.”Proverbs 28:27

Recite the verse a couple  of times and then ask,”who likes to give to others? And do you think this pleases the Lord?”

Bible Story: Nehemiah 5: 1-12

Nehemiah has been God’s partner in rebuilding the walls in Jerusalem. He not only cares about the wall, he also cares about the peoples well being. He wanted to make sure all the people had enough food, water, shelter, and clothing. Read the bible and see what he does.

Questions:

  1. Nehemiah 5 tells us that the people said “our sons and daughters are numerous.”  So are there alot of people or few people?”
  2. Do you think it cost alot of money to feed a big family?
  3. Many of the people in Jerusalem were poor and could not afford to pay taxes. Do you think they should have to pay high taxes?
  4. What does Nehemiah do and how did the nobles respond?

APPLICATION

In today’s lesson we saw that Rahab risked her life to help Joshua’s spies. Rahab’s decision to help God’s people saved her life and the life of her family. Like Rahab our outward actions speak louder than words, demonstrate what we believe, and show what we are devoted to. Our decisions will also affect those we love.
